Here are a couple pictures of comet Lulin I shot at Buffalo LakeSaturday night February 21st. I used a Canon xti attached to a 4"refractor on a tracking mount. If you look closely at the 4 minuteexposure you can see the nucleus of the comet is a dash, but the starsare dots.
Lulin's green color comes from the gases that make up its Jupiter-sizedatmosphere. Jets spewing from the comet's nucleus contain cyanogen: apoisonous gas found in many comets, and diatomic carbon. Both substancesglow green when illuminated by sunlight in the near-vacuum of space.
